Dupes or Disciples?

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind."
Matthew 22:37 (NIV)

The problem with the human mind is not just that in its natural or unconverted state, the mind is contrary to God. That's bad enough. But there's also a cosmic battle being waged for the control of your mind. This world, under the control of Satan, is filled with every kind of “philosophy and empty deception” imaginable - and people by the millions are buying into these false systems. But Satan isn't satisfied with that. He's also after the minds of believers.
Now he knows he can't mess with our salvation, because we are secure in Christ. But if the Devil can mess with our minds and get us thinking like pagans, he can render us useless in our impact for Christ.

Let me give an example of how hard Satan is working to capture people's minds. Someone has pointed out that although the New Age movement has no world headquarters, no full-time missionaries on the field, and no coherent organization, it is attracting disciples at a dizzying rate.

Now we know that the New Age philosophy is about as mindless and silly as any “ism” going. Pay a few hundred bucks and learn how to be your own God. So if it's so mindless, why are millions of people flocking to New Age teaching? Who's behind it? I'll give you one guess. No human is smart enough to pull this off.

That's a good example of what passes for thinking out there in the world. But look whom we have to pattern our minds after: Jesus Christ, “the fulness of Deity… the head over all rule and authority” (vv. 9-10). Because He is complete, we are complete in Him - including our minds. Everything you need to develop a Christlike mind, you will find in Him.

The problem with many of us is that we are listening to John and Joe and whomever instead of to Jesus. When we stand before Christ, some of us will have to say, “Well, John told me…” To which Jesus will answer, “John's not even up here. What were you doing listening to him?” So I ask you the question I ask myself: Are we going to be Satan's dupes or Jesus’ disciples?

If you've ever wondered why you need to develop a Christian mind,
Colossians 2:8 should answer your question.

Pause To Pray...

When we pause to pray....
We step from the doorway of discouragement to the pathway of peace.
We trade worry for worship.
We magnify God and become less intimidated by our problems.
We hold up the banner of victory and lay down the label of victim.
We quicken what's most alive in our spirit and quiet the chaos of living in a sin-soaked world.
Where do you need less of your brain power and more of His prayer power in your life right now?
Take some time to practice trading your worry for worship. Because thinking about, talking about and worrying about something is not the same as praying about it.

Jesus Wants You To Know...

"Stop worrying, and listen carefully for My voice. But remember that I speak softly. If your own thoughts are too noisy, you will not hear Me. . . That is why I gave you a special gift - My Spirit inside you. Ask My Spirit to quiet your thoughts so that you can hear Mine. Then sit peacefully in My Presence - letting My thoughts become yours."
"...love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice,
and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life..."

Tired of Toughing It Out?

What to Do If You're Tired of Toughing It Out
(Overcoming Negative Thoughts for a Positive Life)

Have you ever noticed how so many different thoughts run through our minds every day? Some are good, some bad. Unfortunately, our natural temptation is to focus on the bad; so accepting them doesn't take any effort. The effort comes when we're determined to cast down the negative thoughts, and take a firm grasp of the positive ones.

The Battle for Your Thoughts

Positive minds full of faith and hope produce positive lives. The opposite is also true: negative minds full of fear and doubt produce negative lives, which can ultimately destroy your life. Some people have been hurt so many times that they don't think they can face the pain of another letdown. Therefore, they refuse to hope so they won't be disappointed.

Battles are fought in our minds every day. When we begin to feel the battle is just too difficult and want to give up, we must choose to resist negative thoughts and be determined to rise above our problems. We must decide that we're not going to quit.

When we're bombarded with doubts and fears, we must take a stand and say: "I'll never give up! God's on my side. He loves me, and He's helping me! I'm going to make it!"

Don't Give Up!

No matter how bad the battle rages in your mind, don't give up! Step out and regain the territory that's been stolen from you. Even if it's only an inch at a time, make sure you're leaning on God's grace and not on your own ability.

In Galatians 6:9 the apostle Paul simply encourages us to keep on keeping on! Don't be a quitter! Don't have that old "give up" spirit. God's looking for people who will find the courage to rise above all the negative and pursue the positive.

Whatever you may be facing or experiencing in your life right now, I want to encourage you to stay positive and refuse to give up! God is with you. He'll help you make spiritual progress - strengthening and encouraging you to keep on keeping on during rough times. It's easy to quit, but it takes faith to press on to victory.

Jesus Wants You To Know...

"Walk with Me in holy trust, responding to My initiatives rather than trying to make things fit your plans. I died to set you free, and that includes freedom from compulsive planning. When your mind spins with a multitude of thoughts, you cannot hear My voice. A mind preoccupied with planning pays homage to the idol of control. Turn from this idolatry back to Me. Listen to Me and live abundantly!"

"Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails."
Proverbs 19:21

Condemning Thoughts

...He [the devil] was a murderer from the beginning,
and
does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaks a lie,
he speaks from his own resources,
for he is a liar and the father of it.
John 8:44 (NKJV)

Do you ever question if you’re good enough? Are you more likely to dwell on what’s wrong with you than what’s right?

Me too. One day I was scrutinizing myself to find out what my problem was, but the more I picked myself apart, the more it dawned on me: Another voice was egging me on. It was the voice of the enemy, Satan. As I listened to his lies, they zapped my sense of worth and security.

For a long time, I didn’t recognize the enemy for who he was. The negative thoughts and deceitful suggestions sounded like my own voice.

Now I see that from the start, Satan’s goal has always been to trick and deceive God’s people. The Bible opens with a serpent who slithered into the lives of Adam and Eve and filled their heads with lies they believed, lies that separated them from God. John 8:44 tells us Satan "was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

This liar also tempted Jesus. Our Savior was always ready, though, to defeat the evil one. In Matthew 4:1-11, He did it with the Word of God, countering Satan with, “It is written …” (NIV).

We, too, have this weapon in our arsenal. As we fill our hearts and minds with Scripture, we can defeat the lies we tell ourselves and the lies Satan and his dark forces whisper in our thoughts.

When I compare my negative thoughts to God's Word, the differences amaze me:

I think, I’m lost.
God’s Word says He watches my paths and establishes my ways
(Proverbs 5:21; Proverbs 4:26).

I think, No one loves me.
God’s Word says He loves me more than life
(John 3:16).

I think, I’m ugly.
God’s Word says I’m wonderfully made
(Psalm 139:14).

I think, I’m alone, and no one understands me.
God’s Word says He will never leave me and He has plans for my life
(Deuteronomy 31:6; Jeremiah 29:11).

I think, I’m just not good enough.
God’s Word says I was created in His image
(Genesis 1:26-27).

When the enemy tries to slither in with false accusations, we must be ready to combat him with what God’s Word says about us. To get started, evaluate your thoughts and pray for wisdom to distinguish the voice of the enemy. Condemning thoughts that steal your confidence in who you are in Christ aren’t from God.

Let’s commit to renew our minds with the Word of God each day and replace those worn-out, destructive lies with His Truth.

Dear Lord, thank You for Your life-giving Truth. Please fill me with Your Word so I can live in freedom and confidence! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

God Is The Way Maker

Stop worrying about what you are going to do. God is still the Way Maker. He is already opening the road in front of you, even where you cannot see a path ahead.

Your heart may feel worn out. You lie awake and stare at the ceiling, replaying conversations, test results, bank statements, what your children did or did not say. You think through every “what if,” every worst case, every burden you are carrying for the people you love, and by morning you feel empty.

You love the Lord. You have walked with Him for years, yet your thoughts still run ahead of you, trying to peek around every corner. You wish you could see the plan, the timeline, the exact way He will help your family, your health, your future. The not knowing sits on your chest like a weight you cannot quite push away.

But friend, you belong to the One who called Himself the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is not asking you to chart the course. He is not expecting you to keep all the pieces in the air. He simply asks you to stay close to Him. While you are studying the map and worrying about every turn, He is already out in front, clearing the road you cannot see and arranging details you do not even know to pray about.

Think back over your life. There were seasons you were not sure how you would pay the bills, raise the children, survive the loss, or bear the disappointment. At the time, it all looked dark and confusing. Later, when you looked back, you could trace His care through every detour and delay. What felt like confusion turned out to be protection. The God who carried you then has not changed. He is still guiding, still guarding, still opening a way where there does not seem to be one.

Right now, in this very ordinary moment, God is at work behind the scenes. While you stir a pot on the stove. While you answer a message from a grown child. While you straighten the pillows in the living room or sit at the table with a quiet cup of coffee. He is speaking to hearts you cannot reach. He is moving in rooms you will never sit in. He is unlocking doors that, from where you stand, still look shut.

Jesus Wants You To Know...

"I understand your struggles; I know that the world exerts relentless pressure on you, trying to squeeze you into its mold. This is why you need time alone with Me. When you open up to Me and invite Me to transform you, I can work freely in you and accomplish amazing things. One of My most challenging tasks is renovating your mind, and My Spirit is always at work on this project. He does not overwhelm you with His Power. Instead, He prompts you gently and convicts you cleanly - showing you where you need to make changes and helping you develop new attitudes."

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." - Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

Prayer: Faithfulness

Cultivating The Fruit Of The Spirit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.”
Galatians 5:22-23 (CSB)

What happens when a garden is neglected? Weeds choke out flowers, thorns overtake pathways, and what was once beautiful becomes a tangled mess.

Now imagine stepping into a well-tended garden - vibrant colors, sweet fragrances, and life flourishing everywhere. The difference isn’t simply in the soil’s potential but in the gardener's care.

The Apostle Paul used agricultural imagery in Galatians 5 to remind us that Christian life, in a sense, is like a garden. We have two potential influences vying for control of our hearts: the sinful flesh and the Holy Spirit. Each produces dramatically different fruit.

Philosopher and writer James K. Smith, pulling from Saint Augustine, uses this illustration: Think of your heart as a “love pump.” When the flesh is in charge, that pump is constantly working to draw love, attention, and validation toward itself. The result? A scarcity mindset that produces jealousy, strife, selfish ambition, and envy - what Paul called “the desire of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).

But when we follow the lead of the Spirit, something beautiful happens. That same love pump begins working differently - our hearts draw from God's infinite love and pump it out toward others. The result is this: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things” (Galatians 5:22-23).

An interesting detail is that "fruit" (in Greek, karpos) is a singular noun here. This isn't nine separate fruits we must strive to produce independently. It’s singular because it’s ordered and produced by one Spirit of peace. One fruit with nine expressions - all driven and framed by love.

Love is mentioned first in Galatians 5:22 because it's the source from which all other spiritual virtues flow. Love is the greatest virtue, according to 1 Corinthians 13:1, by which we live and execute the gifts of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:16-25 gives us the practical steps: “Walk by the Spirit … led by the Spirit … live by the Spirit … keep in step with the Spirit” (CSB). All of us are walking toward something and being led by someone or something - the question is what and whom.

The beautiful truth is that every morning, we can decide: Will I choose the anxious striving of the flesh, or will I invite the Spirit to cultivate His fruit in me?

This choice happens in the small moments when someone cuts us off in traffic, when we’re overlooked for recognition, or when relationships disappoint us. We can either react from the flesh's scarcity mindset or respond from the Spirit's abundance.

No matter what condition your life is in right now, the Spirit of God stands ready to pour out His life-giving presence.

Holy Spirit, I invite You to tend the garden of my heart. Help me walk in step with You today, producing fruit that nourishes others and brings glory to God. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Meme: Satan Target's Your Mind...

Think About What You Think About

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind …” Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Thoughts. We cannot see them. We cannot buy them. We cannot always predict them. But we cannot deny this about them: They define our lives. If we think well, we live well. If we think poorly, we live poorly.

But do we understand that we can manage our lives by managing our thoughts?

Not only does neuroscience back this concept, but the idea is also embedded throughout Scripture, including in our key verse, Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind …”

In this verse, the Apostle Paul contrasted two types of people: one who is conformed and one who is transformed. One is shaped by society; the other is renewed by the work of God.

The word “conformed” reminds me of the Play-Doh kit I had as a kid. It came with a dozen or so containers of “modeling compound.” Assorted colors of clay could be pressed, smooshed, squished, rolled, squeezed, and shaped. Nothing in the Bible would incline us to think that the Apostle Paul played with Play-Doh. But abundant messages from his pen allude to the very real pressure to conform to the world.

The mastermind behind these attacks? The devil.

Satan aims to derail us with unruly and ungodly thoughts. When our thinking goes off-track, so does our life. But by the power of Jesus, we can avoid being conformed and instead “be transformed by the renewal of [our] mind” (Romans 12:2).

What a choice word! Paul, writing in the Greek language, chose the verb metamorphoo, which we translate as “transformed.” Anyone who paid attention in middle school science class remembers that the process of turning a caterpillar into a butterfly is also called metamorphosis. The squirmy, furry worm is transformed into a winged, colorful, high-flying butterfly.

God promises you an even greater transformation.

Stuck in your head? Hounded by regrets? Weighed down by worry? Change is possible! The thoughts that have characterized your past need not characterize the rest of your life. God will move you from worm to butterfly, from clay-like to Christlike.

The part of Romans 12:2 that says “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” is also in the passive voice, meaning that God does the work! A new mind is less the result of human effort and more the result of divine intervention. God made our brains; He can retrain our brains. He renews our minds. He reroutes our thought patterns.

With God as your Helper, you will discover a new way of thinking and a better way of living. Could there be a greater promise to ponder? Could there be a greater time to ponder it?

Tame your thoughts and transform your life!

Dear heavenly Father, thank You that You have not left me alone with my thoughts. I pray that Your Spirit would reveal to me the negative thoughts I’m believing and renew my mind with truth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

- Max Lucado

Are you struggling with out-of-control thoughts? God has not left you alone in the battle of your mind. In Tame Your Thoughts, Max explores three biblical and practical tools and then applies them to the most common thought problems: worry, guilt, anxiety, and others.

How Your Thought Life Affects Your Peace

If we’re being honest with ourselves, most of us aren’t who or what we think we are. Our thinking is marred at best, off-track, and in most cases, needs to be changed.

How do I know this to be true? Aside from my experience pastoring so many through the years, God’s Word calls us to a “renewal” of our minds. That means trading in our old perceptions, opinions, ideas, beliefs, and self-centered attitudes for a new set of perceptions, opinions, ideas, beliefs, and attitudes that God develops in us. These godly responses are nurtured by regular reading of Scripture and meditating on what’s been read in the Bible. Christ’s followers are urged to avoid being “conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2).

Out of a renewal of our thinking comes a change in our speech patterns and our behaviors. As our speech and behavior become renewed, our relationships with others become renewed. And as our relationships become renewed, our immediate world is renewed as well. It all begins in the mind with what we choose to think and what we choose to dwell upon.

You have the ability to determine what you’ll think. At any time, you can refocus your mind to a new topic, task, or problem to solve instead of negative thinking that will steal your peace and/or cause you to venture into rebellion or sin. You have the ability to say, “I choose to trust God,” in any situation you face or thought you have.

Furthermore, any child of God who takes a willful stand against thought patterns that clearly are harmful is going to be provided a way of escape from that circumstance. God will help you focus your mind on something other than your problem or bad thought pattern if you will make the initial step in His direction.

When you guard your mind, you guard your peace. When you offer prayers to God with faith and thanksgiving - no matter what trials you face - He assures you inner peace (Philippians 4:6-7). And when you focus your thinking on what’s true, noble, virtuous, lovely, pure, and praiseworthy, you rely upon God with increasing faith and trust.

You can never fully exhaust your ability to think about the goodness and greatness of God. Choose to respond to life the way Jesus responded. Guard your prayer life. Guard your thought life. Seek the Father and all that’s godly. His Word promises that when you fill your mind with what is virtuous and praiseworthy, “the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9).

Giving Up Anxiety

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or what you will drink;
nor about your body, what you will put on.
Is not life more than food and the body more than
clothing?
Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns;
yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Matthew 6:25-26

There’s nothing about a circumstance that automatically creates anxiety. Anxiety occurs because of the way we respond to a problem or troubling situation. Your ability to choose is part of God’s gift of free will to every human being. You can choose how you feel. You can choose what you think about, and you can choose how you will respond to a circumstance. It certainly isn’t God’s purpose for you to feel anxious - He doesn’t allow situations in your life so you’ll have anxiety. The Father may allow a situation in your life to develop stronger faith, grow and mature, or change a bad habit or negative attitude. But God doesn’t set you up for anxiety. He’s always at work to bring you to a place where you’ll trust Him more, obey Him more fully, and receive more of His blessings.

Jesus Wants You To Know...

"You tend to feel guilty about pushing back the boundaries of your life to make space for time alone with Me. The world is waiting to squeeze you into its mold and to crowd out time devoted to Me. The ways of the world have also warped your conscience, which punishes you for doing the very thing that pleases Me most: seeking My Face. Listen to Me above the clamor of voices trying to distract you. Ask My Spirit to control your mind, for He and I work in perfect harmony."

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children." - Romans 8:15-16

Where Is Your Head At?

Scripture:
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things. - Philippians 4:8

Reflect:
What is the value of following Paul’s advice and focusing on “these things?”

I don’t know about you but what I am thinking about has a significant impact on me and the people around me. For example, if I’m thinking about how much I have to do and how little time I have to do it, I am more likely to snap at my kids for interrupting me. If I am hyper-focused on all of the what-if’s, I am likely to feel anxious. If I am focused on everything that I don’t have, I am likely to feel discontent. If I focus on the flaws of the people around me, I am less likely to love and appreciate them.

The same principle applies to sin. In Luke 6:45, Jesus said “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Basically, what is in our hearts eventually spills over into our actions. So how do we get good into our hearts?

In today’s verse, Paul gives us the answer and it’s really quite simple. If we want good to come out of us, we have to put good things into us. We can positively influence our actions by safeguarding what we put into our hearts and minds.

First, we should immerse ourselves in the truth. Jesus told us in John 17:17 that God’s Word is truth! If we want truth to come out of us, we need to spend more time soaking in the truth of His Word and less time soaking up the lies of this world.

Then, Paul said to think about things that are honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praise-worthy. Would you consider the last show you watched to be “pure?” Would the lyrics of the music you listen to be considered “praise-worthy?” Are the images you take in “lovely?” Is the content of the books you read “commendable?” If the answer is no or usually no, are the messages you are surrounding yourself with bringing you peace or anxiety? Do they have the potential to positively impact your spiritual life or negatively impact it? Is what you are taking in appealing to your sin nature or your new nature in Jesus Christ?

Where is your head at? Are you concentrating on commendable things? Are you focusing on His holiness? Are you taking in messages that are true and lovely? How are you storing up good treasure in your heart so that goodness can overflow? We tend to do what we think. So set your minds on “these things” and “these things” will overflow into your life.

Pray:
Jesus, You are the only One who is truly honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy. Help me to set my mind on things that glorify You and conform me into Your image. I know that what I put into my head and my heart eventually overflows into my actions. I want my thoughts and my life to glorify You. Amen.
